Back in August, Nikkei published a report which described a working enviroment inside the Konami's Digital Entertainment department which includes video games, arcade games, social games, mobile games and so on. In the report Nikkei highlights a workplace where employee movement is monitored by camera and developers are reassigned to menial jobs if they're considered no longer useful. Here are some of the examples:The famous Kojima Productions studio, which created the highly successful Metal Gear franchise is now called "Number 8 Production Department". The computers inside the department aren't connected to the internet and only using LAN to communicate with each other.Employees need to change their email addresses every few months. Their emails are typically a few letters followed by a string of numbers.Konami game developers who aren’t seen as useful are reassigned to jobs as security guards, cleaning staff at the company’s fitness clubs or roles at a pachi-slot machine factory. This includes both, the junior staff and a well-known producers that have years if not decades of experience in the industry. That one former employee, upon announcing on Facebook that they were leaving Konami and had got a new job elsewhere, had their post monitored. Nikkei says remaining Konami staff who “liked” the post were all reshuffled within the company. This all started back in 2010, when the company launched its arcade game Dragon Collection. It was a success in the Land of the Rising Sun and Konami management decided to fully change its strategy and focus more on social games and leave its video gaming business, that was the company's major source of revenue in the last few decades, behind. And since then, Konami game developers are suffering from such a treatment from the management. But the person who suffered the most from it is Hideo Kojima, a pioneer in the video gaming industry, that produced such a popular franchises like Metal Gear and Castlevania. He joined Konami in 1986 as a designer and later, in the mid 2000s became company's vice president of Digital Entertainment business. Since the shakeup that happened after the release of Dragon Collection, he was a main target for Konami's top management. First, they changed the name of his studio, then removed his name from Metal Gear marketing material. After that Kojima said that he will leave the company this Autumn after the release of his final game, but despite reports that Kojima left the company in October 2015, a spokesman for Konami stated that he was "taking a long time off from work.". Last week, at the yearly ceremony of The Game Awards, a host of the show Geoff Keighley explained that Kojima did not attend the event, being reportedly barred from attending by Konami: “As you noticed, Hideo Kojima is not here with us tonight and I want to tell you a little about that. Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s awards ceremony to accept any awards. He’s still under an employment contract. And it’s disappointing and it’s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates.” Those facts show that Konami's top management instead of making a number great products, are fighting their own employes that helped the company to succeed in the recent years. Once a pioneer in the video gaming industry, Konami is killing itself by doing such stupid decisions that aren't acceptable in modern world. And if they don't change their ways of doing business, I don't see a future for this company. P.S: Fans left a message at the Metal Gear stand at this years Gamescon, which stated: A Hideo Kojima Game.
